Obituary for Cornell Mitchell

Cornell Mitchell Sr. 92, departed this life on Thursday, October 3, 2019, in Decatur Memorial Hospital.

Cornell was born May 18, 1927, in Water Valley, Mississippi (Penola County) the son of Adam and Egeria Mitchell.

He married Jimmie Lee Barnes on September 5, 1953. He is retired from Wagner Castings after 40 years of service as a press operator.
Cornell was baptized at an early age at Providence Missionary Baptist Church in Mississippi.

He left Mississippi at age 15 and went to Wilson, Arkansas, West Memphis, and then to Osceola, Arkansas with only a 7th grade education. He held various jobs along the way. He worked in oil mill and compress in Wilson, Arkansas. He was a painter in West Memphis where he wrote the letters on the water tank. He delivered lumber in West Memphis.

Cornell moved to Decatur in 1951 where he worked as a cook at the VFW.  After moving here, he joined the Church of the Living God CWFF under the leadership of Bishop Morgan.

He was a great husband, father, brother, uncle, cousin, friend, and provider. He was our hero. He honored his marriage vows by taking care of his wife of 66 years. Cornell brought joy to those in his presence. He loved everyone.

Cornell was an amazing family man. He provided the best for his wife and children. He enjoyed grabbing his special stick and walking every day. He enjoyed gardening in the past. Cornell will be remembered as "Cadillac Kid" so rough and tough and don't take no stuff.

He leaves to cherish loving memories his wife: Jimmie Lee (Missie) Mitchell of Decatur, IL; sons: Cornell Mitchell Jr., Michael Mitchell, and Steve (Kim) Mitchell all of Decatur, IL, daughters: Jacqueline (Louis) Reed of Detroit, MI, and Tina Mitchell of Decatur, IL, grandchildren: Chazettee Mitchell, Dominique Mitchell, and Diamond Reed, five great grandchildren, one brother: Alvell Mitchell Sr., and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and special friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents, 10 brothers: Lawrence (Charm), Phillip (Billy Boy), Horace, Nathaniel, Albert, Audrey (Roy), Alton, Otto, Dewitt, and Carl, two sisters: Evelyn(Inez) Thomas, “Doll Baby” and great grandson: Isaiah Daniel.
