Obituary for Lillian G. Osborne-McGowan

Mrs. Lillian G. Osborne-McGowan was born on November 7, 1927 in Little Rock, Arkansas.

She was the sixth child of 12 born to the late Rev. Jesse S. Osborne and Savada E. (Johnson) Osborne. Lillian received her formal education in Little Rock, Arkansas at Stephen Elementary and Dunbar High School.

Lillian was raised in a Christian home and joined church at the age of 10. She was baptized by her father who was the Pastor of St. John Baptist Church in Little Rock, Arkansas and became an usher at age 13.

Lillian was married to Quinther McGowan from May 1962 to 1980 no children were born to this union.

Lillian learned upholstery from her husband and learned it well.  They operated Alton Small Business. In 1973 when she moved to Decatur, Illinois, she named it Lillian Upholstery.   Even at the age of 74, she was still doing upholstery.  People would often stop and ask her “Are you still doing upholstery “and her response would be, “Yes, what would you like for me to do.” She enjoyed doing her work and even taught classes.  She would give out a diploma at the completion of her courses and took before and after photos.

While in Decatur, she joined Antioch Missionary Baptist Church where she served on the Usher Board until her health wouldn’t allow her to stand as much.   She joined the Nurses Guild Ministries, Sunday School Class #5, Women Missionary Ministries and the Fellowship Ministry.

Lillian enjoyed doing for others.  If you would call her she would be there to take you wherever you had to go.  If you needed anything she would do her best to see that your need was filled.

Lillian will be missed by her friends and Antioch congregation.  In addition, she was preceded in death by her parents, 4, brothers and 2 sisters.

She leaves not to mourn but to cherish her fond memories: her sister, Rose Blaney of Chicago, IL; brother, Arthur (Faye) Osborne of Hawthorne, CA, her Pastor and First Lady, Rev. Dr. C.D. and Gladys Stuart and the Antioch Missionary Baptist Church family along with a host of nieces and nephews.
