Obituary for Ollie Roy Jelks

Ollie Roy Jelks, 65, of Jacksonville, Florida departed this life on December 30, 2018.  Ollie was born on March 31, 1953 in Decatur, Illinois to the parents of Mary (Perry) Jelks and the late Harmon Jelks Sr.

Ollie was a graduate of Stephen Decatur High School.  Upon graduating from High School, Ollie briefly attended Parkland Community College in Champaign, Illinois before moving to Detroit, Michigan where he worked for Bell Telephone Company as a Lineman prior to joining the United States Army in 1972. 

Following his honorable discharge from the United States Army, Ollie moved to Indianapolis, Indiana where he joined the Indiana Rank of Firemen and adopted the Fireman's Creed.  Ollie retired as a fireman in 1998.

Upon his retirement, Ollie was more fully able to pursue  many of his passions and hobbies in life such as traveling, fishing and cooking.  Ollie enjoyed traveling to different States and meeting new people.  He immensely loved fishing, especially with his brothers, as well as preparing special dishes for his family & friends. Ollie also enjoyed listening to music.  If you truly knew Ollie you knew that if he was not busy you could find him relaxing inside of his van listening to jazz & other diverse kinds of music that he loved.  Ollie also liked to solved crossword puzzles and was an avid cruciverbalist.  

Ollie, son of Harmon Sr. & Mary Jelks, brother, nephew, cousin, uncle, father, grandfather, great grandfather and friend of many, will be dearly missed.  

Ollie leaves not to mourn but to cherish the memories that they had with him, his mother Mary (Perry) Jelks of Decatur, Illinois, daughter; Kia D. Jelks of Decatur, Georgia, step-daughter Karen Foy of Indianapolis, Indiana, step-son Corey (Joanna) Foy of San Antonio, Texas; brothers; Herman (Cee Cee) Jelks Jr, Terry Jelks of Decatur, Illinois, sisters; Mary Spence, Gloria Hursey both of Bloomington, Illinois, Autry (Ike) Mann, Diane Jelks of Decatur, Illinois, Helen Jelks of Chicago, Illinois, sister-in-law; Patricia Jelks of Decatur, Illinois, aunts; Clara Smith, Carrie Ligon, Lettie Allen of Decatur, Illinois, Marjorie Poe, Goldie (Curtis) Cole, Georgia Phelps of Detroit, Michigan, uncles; Wilbur (Cora) Perry of Detroit, Michigan, Paul (Dillyah) Jelks of Decatur, Illinois, grandchildren; Kruze Jelks, Cynkia Jelks of Detroit, Michigan, Kaija Jelks, Kajee Jelks of Decatur, Georgia, Jaylen Foy, (deployed in Africa), great grandson Bryson Jelks of Detroit, Michigan and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.

Ollie was proceeded in death by his father the late Harmon Jelks Sr., his loving daughter Eboni Jelks and his brother Ferris Stephen Jelks.

The family will hold a Tribute in memory of Ollie Roy Jelks that will be announced at a later date.
