Obituary for Willie Mae Beasley

Willie Mae Beasley was called from labor to reward on Tuesday, August 6, 2019 at her home in Decatur, Illinois.

She was the second of five children born to Willie Harris, Sr. and Marie Douglas Harris, born on May 29, 1928 in Marianna, AK.

After completing Marianna High School, Willie Mae moved to Decatur, IL.  She was united in holy matrimony to John Albert Beasley on May 22, 1947 and was blessed with seven children.

Willie Mae retired from Decatur Public School District 61 as a Teacher’s Assistant in home education for 15 years. She enjoyed working with families to prepare children for a successful entry into Kindergarten through third grade.  She took such pride in her work that she would spend hours in the evening preparing for the next week’s training with parents.

Willie Mae was a lifelong member of New Salem Baptist Church.  She served in many different capacities, including Sunday school teacher, Senior Usher Board, Missionary Society (Ruth Circle), Pastor’s Search Committee, and the Soup Kitchen-serving those in need.  Along with her husband, John, Willie Mae started New Salem’s Clothing and Furniture Ministry that served the community for many years.  She loved the Lord and her church family.

Willie Mae was very active in the community with social and political organizations.  As a member of Big Sisters and the Centurion organizations, she championed equal opportunities for everyone and promoted women issues.

Willie Mae and John were licensed foster parents with the Illinois Department and Family Services for approximately 25 years. She not only fed the children in her care, but there was always room at the table for other children in the neighborhood.
